Omar Alfredo Rodriguez-Lopez

I would bet that 7layer is a little surprised that no Mars Volta has been posted yet... and I'm not going to post it... yet... but here is the musical arranger, producer, writer, and one part of what he calls the two part soul of the Mars Volta. He does a lot of solo work, five albums in total with some collaboration on other projects on the side. This album "Calibration (Is Pushing Luck and Key Too Far)" is fantastic. Its the fourth album released in what Omar calls the "Amsterdam Series" which is just the name he gave the series of records he made while living in Amsterdam. He also did some stuff under the group name The Omar Rodriguez Lopez Quintet. As always a lot of Spanish influence, lots of Spanish lyrics. Tons of rhythm, tons of great guitar, really well put together over all. Track six features guitar and vocals by John Frusciante while Omar actually gets into some vocals on 2 7 8 4. Album art work was done by some graffiti artist he knows Grey. I hope you notice the album picks up track 4 in track 10.

Scarling

oh scarling.
Jessicka Addams (nee Fodera) is one of my biggest idols, and I'm not big on role models. Her moving on from Jack Off Jill to scarling eerily mirrored my maturing from angry goth chick to bitter weird girl. Sure, it isn't that much of a change, but baby steps dear, baby steps.

I love both bands, and fans can easily transition between Jack Off Jill and Scarling, but right now, lets stay in the present.

the video for "City Noise" matches the music. Cloudy day tunes.

The Futureheads- S.T.

The Futureheads are one of my favorite bands form England for a couple reasons i can express by comparing and contrasting them to other English bands.
They're like bloc party without being pretentious.
They're like The Libertines without the drug habit and skinny ladies.
Ther're like The Hives without....... Being Swedish?

But i digress, seriously listen to this album. It's catchy, tight, and they'll be stuck in your head for a while.

Sparks-This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both of Us

"This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us" is a weird, glam-fused sort of tune, and is the first song of one of the coolest albums ever, Kimono My House. Really, Sparks is a bit of a hard band to nail down, some albums are glam, some are this weird psuedo-new wave sort of deal, and others are simply mish-moshed. Russell Mael's falsetto voice is amazing, if he doesn't have his balls in a vice grip, I'll be damned. And weirdly enough, this band is American. It's a real rare gem in glam rock, its so perfectly balanced and flat out catchy.

Sorry about that weird bit in the first few seconds, who knows why its there.

Siouxie Sioux did a really cool cover of it too, her voice fits right in.

Faith No More's cover has that sinister Mr. Bungle vibe towards it, which is fucking awesome, let me tell you. If Mike Patton did a cover of fucking Skrewdriver's greatest hits, I'll buy that.

No, Justin Hawkins, no. Go back to humping spaceships please.

Sparks-Kimono My House (here)

no clue as if to someone will take it down, but its there for the taking.

GZA The Genius "Liquid Swords"

Classic 90's east coast rap album by The GZA. Got tons of collaborations with other Wu-Tang members and some others like Killah Priest on B.I.B.L.E. Lots of good tracks that everyone has heard, but probably not on this record but from samples of it. The album art is great, an artist for Marvel comics did it. Typical Wu-Tang images, swords, chess board etc. A few of the tracks, like the first two, have a sick sample from an old Kung Fu movie called Shogun Assassin. Its actually the movie from Kill Bill when Uma is watching a movie with her daughter in Bill's house just before Uma and Bill fight it out. Check it out and enjoy.
1. Liquid Swords (Featuring RZA)*
2. Duel of the Iron Mic (Featuring ODB, Masta Killa, Inspectah Deck)*
3. Living in the World Today (Featuring RZA and Method Man)*
4. Gold (Featuring Method Man)

Miles Davis "Sketches of Spain"

This is the single must have record for any jazz collection. Arguably the best Miles Davis record, (its not much of an argument for this particular listener) but certainly the most unique of Miles' work. Released in 1960 its a record on a grand scale with grand compositions and arrangements. There is just a ton going on. Its not one of the most improvisational records that we are accustomed to hear from Miles, like I said its got a lot more arrangement and composition to it and you can hear it right away in the first track. Although there are certainly the low points of certain songs where Mr. Davis goes off with his trumpet and does his own thing for a few minutes. All in all an incredible record, it was voted 356 on Rolling Stones top 500 albums off all time which I think was the highest rated jazz record.

Duke Ellington and John Coltrane

This is a record that was put out in '62. It represents an aging Duke Ellington coming to the end of his career and a John Coltrane right in the middle of his prime. It is one of the better collaborations that I have heard. Its a really smooth record, really easy to listen to. If you aren't that familiar with jazz and want to get into it, this is a great first record and will definitely turn you on to the genre. The Album features Duke Ellington on the piano and John Coltrane on the tenor sax. Sam Woodyard and Elvis Jones split the role of drummer, each taking a half of the record and the same goes for Jimmy Garrison and Aaron Bell on the bass.

Paul Metzger

Three Improvisations On Modified Banjo.

Untitled(26:39)
Untitled(9:49)
Untitled(26:06)

This is a banjo from the East, not the banjo of the South.  Metzger is inspirational as he floats between numerous tones. Sounds of India, Tennessee, and China are all melted together to form Metzgers unique tonal blend. His unique modified banjo is fitted with 20 strings and a sitar bridge. His first track could easily be in a kung-fu movie during a very tense but insightful fight between two masters. All and all, the album is amazing and worth a listen.

MF Doom / Mmm...Food

Great record, great rapper here. I got turned onto MF Doom by 7layer when his big hit album The Mouse and the Mask came out with Danger Mouse under the name DangerDoom. Then I got this album and found it to be a lot better. got a lot of funny sound bites and samples in there. Overall a really fun record with some high quality lyrics and beats. He produces all his own stuff and has collaborated with Wu-Tang members, most notably Ghostface, he's done stuff with Talib Kwali, El-P, Mr. Fantastik, just a ton of people and its all good stuff.

Live Pink Floyd

The Great Gig on the Moon - Live in Japan (1972)

Incredible! Starts off with a seemingly impromptu Dark Side full of improves and flourishes. Expect a very different version of The Great Gig In The Sky  that will still kick your ass. Even with this added mobility the album comes full circle at almost exactly how long the studio version is. If this wasn't enough, they spend the next fifteen minutes confusing young Japanese people with awe inspiring renditions of One of These Days and Careful With That Axe Eugene. If you haven't listened to Floyd in a while, or haven't ever listen to them this is worth the time. It'll reacquaint those who have been away from Pink Floyd for some time and will undoubtedly show a new side of the band many haven't seen. Along the same lines as their Live in Pompeii show.

Artist: Niel Young & Crazy Horse / Album: Live at the Fillmore East

Neil Young at his finest, in his prime with Crazy Horse. This is a very cool album, he's come out with a few live albums in a "Performance Series" this being the first. Notice Miles Davis on the same night, John Mayall, The Moody Blues and Joe Cocker later on in the month. I can't emphasize the coolness here enough. Miles Davis and Neil Young with Crazy Horse must've been a wonderful show. This is just a quick record, some great live versions of some classic Neil Young songs. Enjoy.

Artist: Tom Waits / Album: Real Gone

Here is one of Tom Waits' later albums, titled "Real Gone". Real Good record, it kind of represents a comeback for him. Although there has never been a period of time where he wasn't the man. I mean he was in Mystery Men for God sakes. Typical raw voice you're used too. Maybe a little more deep, a little more raw. If Bob Dylan could make his broken glass in the throat voice that he has now work... then you have Tom Waits on this album. Look out for the great guitar solo on "Hoist That Rag"

Artist: Georges Brassens / Albums: Les Amoureux Des Bancs Publics

Ok so Georges Brassens is this French singer, does solo stuff with an acoustic guitar. Its all hilarious, at least what I can understand which isn't a lot because he's kind of out of his mind. Everything is meant to be extrememly satirical or comedic or just dirty. One song of his is about a Gorilla who escapes from a zoo and is running around a town. All the women who see it get horny because of the size of his Chien-Ming Wang. Another funny album. Again if you want some quick translations post em' and ill get back with them.
1. Les Amoureux Des Bancs Publics (The Lovers of Public Benches)
2. Brave Margot (Brave Margot)

11. La Mauvais Herbe Sujet Repentir (The Bad Herb Subject to Repentence/Regret)
12. P...de Toi (p... Of You) ???? no idea what this is
Best Track(s): 2. Brave Margot; 10. La Mauvaise Herbe

Artist: Francoise Hardy / Album: La Question

This is Francoise Hardy. Not quite the status of Edit Piaf, but still really popular singer in France. Shes not much of a looker but if you were to listen without knowing what she looked like... Its a really beautiful record. A lot of great lyrics. Translation doesn't do them justice, the songs need to be listened and appreciated in the original French. I'm not a fan of recoreds re-recorded in another language. If you want some quick translations though just post what you want translated. In short, she's wonderful and makes me want to be locked up in a room with a French girl so she can just talk in French. There have been many have asleep vegetative listens to this record.

2. La Question (The Question)
